Anxiety and Depression
Feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and depression?
How would your life be different if you could manage and reduce the hold anxiety and depression have on you?
Want to rediscover the joy and peace within you that seems overshadowed by stress and sadness?
Anxiety and depression often co-exist because they share some of the same psychological mechanisms: rumination, a negativity bias, a heightened perception of threat, and attachment to negative thoughts and feelings.
Both anxiety and depression or mixed anxiety and depression can result from chronic stress, develop independently with no discernible cause, or be a symptom of complex trauma. At the same time, many people without a significant history of trauma develop symptoms of anxiety and depression.
In the absence of a history of trauma, anxiety and depression are often best addressed through a short course of therapy with occasional follow-up sessions if indicated. In such cases, my approach to treating anxiety and depression is informed by my training in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Mindfulness-based approaches to addressing depression and anxiety help us learn to identify negative thought patterns and automatic responses that may be contributing to our emotional distress while developing a more mindful and compassionate response to these thoughts. This helps break the cycle of negative thinking and improves emotional well-being. The idea is to empower you to take control of your mental health and help you develop lifelong skills for managing stress, anxiety, depression, and other common emotional challenges.
For individuals with a history of complex trauma, integrating mindfulness-based approaches into longer-term therapies is often helpful. Over the years I have worked with many individuals who have found quick relief from anxiety and depression through these approaches.
